Bowmont March 13 2013 (2)

Yesterday it was beautiful outside. It was warm and the sun was out. It was awesome, so I decided to go for a walk.

I forgot my ipod at home, so I didn’t get to listen to the podcast that I downloaded. I thought the walk would be the perfect opportunity to listen to it, so I planned for a 50 minute walk. The podcast ended when I was within sight of the car, so I think it timed it pretty good.

The way out was pretty relaxing cause I was going downhill. However the way back was definitely tough. I forgot how big the hills are. As tough as it was though, it was a great leg workout.

I’m seriously craving spring. I’m ready for the snow to go away and for the green grass and flowers to arrive. I was on the lookout for any crocuses starting to come up, but I didn’t see any. Really, I know it’s probably too early, but I couldn’t help looking.

Does it feel like spring where you live?

Bowmont October 6 2012 (2)

Saturday my dad and I decided to take a walk in Bowmont. We wanted something a little different though, so we went to a different part of Bowmont (Bowmont runs through several neighbourhoods, and is pretty large).

Bowmont October 6 2012 (9)

I always think this pedestrian bridge is so cute. Whenever I go for walks with with my friend, her daughter always asks if we can go to the bridge. Apparently bridges are as much fun for 3 year olds as they are for 29 year olds.

Bowmont October 6 2012 (1)

The bridge leads from the residential side of the river to Bowmont on the other.

Bowmont October 6 2012 (10)

To the west are the mountains, though you can’t see them in this photo.

Bowmont October 6 2012 (11)

To the east of the pedestrian bridge is the train bridge.

Bowmont October 6 2012 (3)

In the spring when the snow is melting from the mountains this is mostly water. Now that it’s cold again, the water has gone back down. It’s amazing how much it changes in just a matter of months.

Bowmont October 6 2012 (5)

A dry riverbed. I’d get washed away if I tried to stand in the same spot in June.

Bowmont October 6 2012 (7)

While we were by the train bridge a train came by, so I had to get a photo of it. It was a lot louder than I thought it would be.

While it wasn’t a long walk, it was still nice to get out and enjoy a nice day.

Did you do anything active this weekend?

 Bowmont September 12 2012 (1)

I went to Bowmont a few days ago. I love that there’s so many different colors everywhere – from grey to brown to gold.

Bowmont September 12 2012 (2)

There were lots of Asters still blooming. They’re usually one of the last things to bloom in the fall. While everything else is turning gold and brown, they’re bright purple. I love them.

| decided to take a different path.Usually I end up going left to avoid this huge valley and hill on the other side, but this time I decided to conquer the hill!

Bowmont September 12 2012 (4)

There were lots of bushes with berries in the valley. It’s pretty cool that even though I’ve spent so much time in Bowmont, I’ve only been in this valley once or twice before.

Getting to the top of the hill was tough, but it was definitely doable. I was breathing pretty hard once I got to the top, but I felt pretty proud of myself for taking it on.

Let me start off by saying that I had taken a couple photos with my phone while I was on my walk. But cause I’m awesome, I had my finger over part of the lens in all of them. That’s what I get for trying to use my phone and not being able to see it very well cause of the sun. So long story short, there’s no photo for this post.

I had some drama with a friend today. It’s been brewing for awhile, and today it finally happened. I was frustrated and upset with her.

When I got home from work though I had two choices: do something constructive or eat too much of something that I shouldn’t be eating in the first place. Lucky for me, I made a good choice.

Even though it was really windy this afternoon, I decided to go for a walk. On the drive over there were leaves all over the place, and there were lots of branches in the road. When I say it was windy, I mean it was REALLY windy.

I enjoyed myself though, despite the fact that I was almost blown away. Even though I had my hair in a pony tail with bobby pins, it was still everywhere when I got back to the house.

While I was out there a funny thing happened. The more I walked, the better I felt. By the time I got back to the car 40 minutes later, I was actually feeling pretty good.

Lesson learned: workout (or go for a walk) when stressed instead of eating. I felt better without the guilt of eating something bad for me.

Bowmont September 4 2012

Here’s what I wanted to do in August:

Take it easy. I think I definitely nailed this one. I spent five days on vacation away from home, work, and everyday life. I needed that break because I didn’t realize how easy it is to let the little things stress me out more than they need to. Now that I know what a difference it makes, I’m definitely going to try to not hold onto things, especially when in the grand scheme of things, they don’t really matter.

Eat better. I’m still trying to work on this one, but I’m definitely in the habit of eating better than I have been the last little while. One thing that felt really good is that I didn’t gain any weight while I was in vacation. I wasn’t gone for too long, but it would have been really easy to eat out and go crazy with the desserts and snacks with the excuse of being on vacation.

This month here’s what I want to accomplish:

Go to Bowmont 3 times a week. I haven’t been spending as much time at Bowmont as I would like. Last summer I walked almost every day, but this summer I’m lucky if I get there once every two or three weeks. I want to make sure I enjoy it while it’s still warm and sunny out, because before I know it it’ll be winter already.

Journal 3 times a week. I journaled every morning while I was on vacation, That’s the most consistent I’ve been in months. I haven’t done it once since I’ve been back. While I don’t think I’d be able to go back to doing it daily right away, I think three times a week is definitely doable.

What are you working on this month?

This afternoon my dad and I decided to go on a walk in Bowmont, one of my favourite parks in the city. He wanted to tackle Waterfall Valley, so we set off.

Bowmont with Dad August 30 2012 (1)

Waterfall Valley goes down to the Bow River and is mostly boardwalk. During the spring when the snow is melting it’s pretty wet in the valley, even with the boardwalk. Waterproof boots are a must!

Bowmont with Dad August 30 2012 (10)

There are lots of interpretive signs along the way, pointing out plants or natural features.

Bowmont with Dad August 30 2012 (2)

The first half of the walk is mostly shrubs, grasses, and flowers. There’s no trees. Going down to the waterfalls is slightly downhill. It’s so slight you don’t really notice it until it’s time to come back and you feel it in your legs.

Bowmont with Dad August 30 2012 (3)

The second half has lots of trees though, and it’s a pretty nice walk even on hot days.

Bowmont with Dad August 30 2012 (4)

Just before the waterfalls there’s a couple big rocks. They look out of place to me and make me wonder whenever I walk past them how they got there. I just don’t think they belong there.

Bowmont with Dad August 30 2012 (5)

Before you get to the waterfall you can hear it. It always reminds me of being in a fairy tale – it’s that cute! It’s hard to see in the photo, but it’s pretty cool how the water has carved away at the stone over time.

Bowmont with Dad August 30 2012 (6)

There are stairs at the very end just after the waterfall that lead to a lookout over the Bow River.

Bowmont with Dad August 30 2012 (9)

The brook joins the Bow River. There are steps that go down to it, but for some reason it was blocked off today. It almost looks like they’re going to do some repair work on them.

Bowmont with Dad August 30 2012 (7)

It’s amazing how blue the water looked today. It was gorgeous! Pretty much all the land in that photo is also Bowmont. It’s actually a pretty big park, with lots and lots of trails to explore.

Bowmont with Dad August 30 2012 (8)

The other side of the river is all houses. How cool would it be to have a house that backs onto the river? I had a friend who lived there in high school, and we got our grad photos taken with the river in the background, it was pretty awesome.

I have another walk planned tonight with a friend. We try to get together once a week to walk and hang out. Sometimes it’s just the two of us, sometimes her two kids and two dogs are with us. It’s always something I look forward to.

Do you have any exciting plans for tonight?

This weekend was another one that flew by. How does that always seem to happen?

Friday night I went on a date – a tasty dinner followed by watching the sunset at Bowmont. Bowmont wasn’t quite as fun as I had hoped though, cause I forgot bug spray and we got eaten alive by the mosquitoes.

Muffin Mix August 13 2012

Saturday morning I was up early and decided to “make” (by make I mean add a couple eggs and some water, it wasn’t really baking) some blueberry muffins. I wasn’t feeling the cereal in the pantry, and the muffins seemed easy enough to make.

Blueberry Muffins August 13 2012

They turned out pretty good. You really can’t go wrong with a breakfast that makes the kitchen smell so good.

Zucchini in Garden August 13 2012

Last night when I was watering I found another zucchini that was ready to be picked. Isn’t he a beauty?

Zucchini from Garden August 13 2012

Who knows why the zucchini ended up turning out curvy. Oh well, I’m sure it’ll taste good anyways.

Sunday I went out for lunch, though I had pancakes and fruit. It’s allowed to have two breakfasts in one day, right?

Zucchini Bread

When I got home I decided to make zucchini bread with the zucchini. I have to admit it was pretty tasty. It didn’t last very long without someone “testing” a piece.

Did you do anything exciting over the weekend?

Better late than never, right? Here’s what I did over the weekend.

Greek Festival June 26 2012 (4)

Friday after work my dad and I headed down to the Greek Festival that was being put on. The main attraction for the two of us was definitely the food. We both ended up getting the chicken souvlaki and a side of pita and tzatziki. Both were pretty good.

Greek Festival June 26 2012 (5)

I asked my dad why he was making a face and he told me that was his “tzatziki face”. Apparently he had been craving it for awhile and thought that face conveyed how much he needed it.

While we were eating the Euro 2012 game was on – Greece vs Germany. The place just about erupted with cheering when Greece scored and tied up the game.

Greek Festival June 26 2012 (1)

We finished off the meal with baklava. Seriously, it has to be one of my favourite desserts. I almost (almost) couldn’t finish it cause it was such a big piece, but it would be a shame to let it go to waste, right?

Sugar Cookies June 26 2012 (2)

Saturday afternoon I made sugar cookies. They turned out pretty good (they didn’t last very long so they must have been tasty), though the only thing I would have changed was to bake them for a few minutes longer. You’ll hear more about these cookies later though.

Bowmont June 26 2012

Sunday I took it pretty easy. I went for a two and a half hour walk with a friend in Bowmont. Two and a half hours of walking and didn’t even cover half the park – I just gave her the “Highlights According to Fiona Tour”. It was from this spot that we saw a deer down in the valley. We both saw something moving down there and at first thought it was a dog (most of Bowmont is off-leash), but then we realized it was way too big to be a dog.

Dirty Socks from Bowmont June 26 2012

The walk started off a little bit rainy, but after about half an hour it stopped. Needless to say though that the grass, boardwalks, and trails were all still wet though. I wore my runners instead of my trail shoes like I probably should have. When I got home I realized how wet and dirty my socks got. It was definitely worth it though. It was a beautiful walk and I got to spend some time with a really good friend.

Even though I didn’t actually play any sports.

Weekend June 22 2012

Source

I started off my weekend Friday afternoon watching some Euro 2012 action. Even though I’ve only been playing soccer since April, I’m amazed at how talented these players are. They’re truly world class. It’s so much fun to watch.

Weekend June 11 2012 (4)

After watching some soccer I finished making these peanut butter cookies. I actually started them Thursday night, but they needed to go into the fridge for at least two hours, but I ended up leaving them there overnight cause I didn’t have time to finish them on Thursday. They turned out pretty good. I’ll be posting about them tomorrow,

Friday night I ended up going bowling with a friend. We were trying to figure out what to do, there weren’t really any movies playing that we were interested in, so we finally settled on bowling,

Weekend June 11 2012 (5)

Lucky for us, it was black light/glow in the dark night where we went. I was wearing a white tank under a purple t-shirt, and they both glowed. My friends jeans were glowing where they were faded. Somehow glow in the dark doesn’t get old, even if you’re almost 30.

After two games we headed over to Denny’s for dessert and to talk. I hadn’t seen my friend for awhile, so we had lots to discuss. I had a slice of cheesecake with strawberries on it. So delicious. I totally forgot to take a photo of it though.

Saturday afternoon I watched some more Euro 2012 soccer and did some laundry. Funny how by the. end of the week there’s so much laundry to do. It seems like it’s never-ending sometimes. Watching soccer while doing it definitely made it easier to do though.

Saturday night I went to a pub with a friend to watch the Kings and the Devils play. It was a totally last minute thing, so I was pretty happy that she could make it and we could spend some time together. New Jersey ended up winning and forcing game 6, which will be happening tonight.

Weekend June 11 2012 (7)

Sunday afternoon I ended up going for a walk with some friends. The plan was to go to a park by the river, but we didn’t get very far before we had to turn back. We’ve had a couple weeks of rainy weather, and combined with the runoff of the snow in the mountains, that means the rivers are really high and flooding. Notice the trees that are half submerged on the right?

Weekend June 11 2012 (8)

That’s supposed to be a path, but it was totally underwater. The dogs seemed prepared to trek right through though. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the water this high before. Although we ended up having to walk through a residential area instead of the park it was still a fun walk with lots of talking. It ended up being a little over 4km in just under an hour. Not too shabby.

My Sunday night ended with Mad Men’s last episode of the season. It seems like it took forever waiting for the season to start, and now it’s over and gone so soon. I’m not sure what I’m going to do with my Sunday nights now.
