1. It’s a long weekend! This last week seemed so long and like it was never going to end. I kept thinking that Wednesday was actually Thursday. I hate when that happens. Needless to say, I definitely enjoyed sleeping in a bit this morning.

2. Yesterday my mom gave me money to buy Easter candy for the family. Yep, my brother and I are definitely adults, but we still get Easter candy. Tell me I’m not the only full grown child who still gets Easter candy from their parents.

3. Speaking of Easter candy, there wasn’t much selection when I went to the grocery store to get it. Apparently you have to get there earlier to get the good stuff. There weren’t even any jelly beans left. Jelly beans will always be Easter candy to me.

4. It’s finally starting to feel like spring. I can go for walks without having a million layers on or avoiding icy sections of sidewalks. I’m definitely enjoying it. There’s even birds singing!

5. Tonight I’m going over to a friend’s place for homemade pizza. When I asked what I could bring, she said nothing, but I told her I’d bring some beer. Cause really, nothing goes better with pizza than beer.

6. That’s all I’ve got for today. Enjoy your long weekend!

Seed Starting March 28 2013 (1)

This week I started some seeds inside. While the last frost date for Calgary isn’t until the end of May, I usually don’t plant anything outside until June, so these guys will be inside for awhile still.

This year I’m trying celery and eggplant for the first time. I also have some tomato, cucumber, and zucchini started too. I’m always so impatient waiting for the first seeds to germinate. The next week or two is going to seem so long. I’m thinking it’s going to be either the cucumber or zucchini that will germinate first.

Check out this post from last year about how I start the plants inside.

Click here to see the garden in full swing last August. Everything in that garden I started from seed. It’s so easy and so much cheaper than buying plants from the nursery.

To check out the harvest I had to pick before the snow started in the fall, check this out. All those green tomatoes ripened inside. There was also a lot of produce that was picked before – that’s just the stuff that I had to bring inside before the frost got to it.

Do you have a garden? What are you growing this year?

Bowmont March 13 2013 (2)

Yesterday it was beautiful outside. It was warm and the sun was out. It was awesome, so I decided to go for a walk.

I forgot my ipod at home, so I didn’t get to listen to the podcast that I downloaded. I thought the walk would be the perfect opportunity to listen to it, so I planned for a 50 minute walk. The podcast ended when I was within sight of the car, so I think it timed it pretty good.

The way out was pretty relaxing cause I was going downhill. However the way back was definitely tough. I forgot how big the hills are. As tough as it was though, it was a great leg workout.

I’m seriously craving spring. I’m ready for the snow to go away and for the green grass and flowers to arrive. I was on the lookout for any crocuses starting to come up, but I didn’t see any. Really, I know it’s probably too early, but I couldn’t help looking.

Does it feel like spring where you live?

A couple weeks ago I ordered some seeds for this year’s garden. I was pretty excited to be ordering them cause it means that eventually the snow and cold weather will go away and spring and sunshine will be here instead.

I’ve used tomato seeds from Casey before and really liked them, I got lots of tomatoes from all the different kinds I tried, so I figured I’d get some more from him. He shipped them out really quick, and I had them within 48 hours of ordering.

If you’re wondering if tomatoes are worth growing, that definitely are! There’s nothing like biting into a tomato that’s full of flavour an hour after it was picked. You’ll never want to go back to grocery store tomatoes again.

From Baker Creek I got eggplant, romaine lettuce, and spinach seeds. I’ve never tried to grow eggplant or spinach, so we’ll see how it goes. For the eggplant seeds I picked a variety that had a shorter growing season cause the growing season here in Calgary is notoriously short.

In addition to the seeds I bought this year, I also have the ones from the last couple years that I’m going to plant too. I’m looking forward to lots of zucchinis again, they were sooo good last year!

Do you have a garden? What are you planning on planting this year?

I hope everyone is enjoying their long weekend and spending time with friends and family.

We’ll be celebrating on Sunday at the hospital. While it definitely won’t be the usual Easter dinner, I think we’re pretty grateful this year. Yeah, someone is in the hospital, but he’s doing a million times better than he was last week.

Happy Easter!

The other day I went for a walk in Bowmont. I hadn’t been in about a week, so I was pretty excited to be back.

We’ve had relatively nice weather for the last little bit, so I was secretly on the hunt for some crocuses. They’re always the first things to bloom every spring, and I needed something pretty to cheer me up. It’s been a really tough couple of weeks.

About fifteen minutes into my walk I found my first crocus. I was so excited! They’re a beautiful flower all on their own, but I think they’re even more beautiful because everything around them still looks dead. They’re the only colorful thing in all of Bowmont right now.

The plan is to go for another walk in Bowmont today, though in a different part where I know there’s usually lots of crocuses. Hopefully I’ll be able to find some more starting to bloom.

The last two days we’ve gotten a ton of snow. That’s what it looked like when I left work this morning.

I’m tired of having to brush off the car and scrape the windows.

I’m ready to put my winter coat, scarf, and gloves in the closet til next year.

I want sunny days.

I’m tired of shoveling the driveway.

I’m ready for spring!

I want to see flowers and green grass and buds on the trees.

I miss hearing the birds singing.

I’m ready for longer days.
