Running Room Magazine

Every couple of months I get a magazine from my local running store. I usually always read it and enjoy it. But for some reason the last one I got made me sad.

I haven’t run since May. May! That seems like a really long time. I guess it is a long time – four months. I stopped cause my plantar fasciitis came back. I haven’t started again cause it’s still in my one foot, though it’s definitely better than it was.

I thought for sure I’d be feeling better by now, but I’m not. I wasn’t every consistent or good at running, but I definitely liked doing it. It made me feel strong and capable every time I’d finish a run that I didn’t think I’d be able to do.

There’s always a silver lining though. Since I’ve stopped running I’ve played soccer (which I’ve really really liked), started yoga again, and bought a bike. I probably wouldn’t have done any of those things if I was still running.

I know I’ll get back to running at some point once my foot is back to being 100%. I shouldn’t be all that sad about it cause some really good things have come out of being injured. I guess it all depends on how you look at it.

This post is better late than never, right? Just pretend it’s Monday while you’re reading this.

Five Guys September 25 2012

Source

I went to Five Guys for the first time on Friday night. The boyfriend lives a couple blocks away from one, so we thought we’d check it out. I got a little cheeseburger and we shared some Cajun fries. It was pretty good.

Saturday was mostly errands and laundry. Saturday night was a friend’s birthday party. You know you’re getting old when your friends turn 30-something and it doesn’t sound old. As a teenager I would have thought that was ancient! I had a barbequed burger and veggies and piece of pumpkin birthday cake for dessert.

Inglewood Bird Sanctuary September 23 2012 (3)

Sunday I spent with the boyfriend. We ended up at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary. Neither of us had ever been there before. There were quite a few paths to walk along. It was really pretty with the changing leaves.

I swear there are birds in this photo! The Canadian Geese are by the closest island. Ironically we only saw one other bird there. Kind of funny that at the bird sanctuary we only saw two different birds.

I would definitely go for a walk here again. Even though we were there on a Sunday morning with quite a few other people, it never felt crowded.

The bird sanctuary is in a pretty cute neighbourhood. On the way there we passed a Mexican restaurant, so we went to it for lunch. We shared a plate of nachos (oh so cheesy and delicious) and a chicken quesadilla. I may or may not have had a margarita.

Little Men Jo's Boys September 25 2012

We walked over to a used book store after lunch. I found the fourth Anne of Green Gables book I had been looking for. I also found the other two books in the Little Women series, which I haven’t read yet. The best part of finding these books is that they don’t look like they’ve ever been read.

Shaun of the Dead September 25 2012

Once we got back to the boyfriend’s place we decided to watch Shaun of the Dead. I don’t think that movie ever gets old. If you haven’t seen it I would definitely recommend it.

Garden Tomatoes September 24 2012

I thought I saw something read on one of the tomato plants, and when I went outside to check it out, I was right. I ended up picking quite a few tomatoes. They were perfectly sweet. No matter how many tomatoes I eat from the grocery store, none of them taste like garden grown ones.

Sunday night I had my second yoga class. We did a lot of the same poses, so it was great to be able to do them again because this time I kind of knew what I was doing. It was the perfect way to end the weekend.

What was your favourite part of your weekend?

Sunday night I had my first yoga class in a long time – 7 months. I can’t believe it’s been that long.

Watermarked Yoga Mat September 22 2012

It was great to be doing it again and I like the teacher, but at the same time it was a pretty tough class. I hope they’re not all going to be like that.

One of the reasons I think it was so hard for me was that I was pretty exhausted. I had played floor hockey earlier in the day for an hour and a half. I knew I should have left earlier, but I was having too much fun.

The other reason why it was so tough was how tight and tense I am. I’ve had a lot of stressful things happen since my last yoga class. I broke up with a boyfriend and my dad has been having some serious health issues, among other things. Apparently a lot of that stress went straight to my back and shoulders.

As I was laying in shavasana at the end of class and trying to relax, all I could feel was how tense my back and shoulders were. My legs and arms felt amazing, but the spots where I hold stress just weren’t relaxing, they were still really tight.

I know I’m not going to be able to get rid of all that tension right away – it took months for it to get there, but at least I now know that I have to work on it. I didn’t think it was that bad before.

Please tell me I’m not the only one who’s amazed when the weekend is suddenly over. Seriously, where did it go?

Weekend in Review (1)

I had bought a Groupon earlier in the week for Far Burger. My dad loves that place, so we went together on Friday for lunch. I’d never been there before so it was a new experience for me.

Weekend in Review (2)

I decided on a veggie burger (my first veggie burger ever!), which I really liked. I’d get it again in a heartbeat. It was pretty big though. I only ate a 1/3 of my fries – it was just too much food.

Weekend in Review (3)

After lunch I ended up doing a little shopping. On the way to the store I wanted to go in we walked past a sports store. They had these big metal things outside on the sidewalk. I had to have my picture taken as a goalie. It’s probably the closest I’ll ever get to playing.

Friday night I went to a barbeque at my boyfriend’s friend’s place. There were hamburgers, beer, and roasted marshmallows. Does it get any better than that?

Saturday morning  I went for a walk with a friend. We ended up going 5k in a little over an hour, which is pretty good considering we had two dogs and a little one in a stroller.

Saturday afternoon I spent looking for a bike. I’ve narrowed it down to 2 or 3, and hopefully I’ll buy one this week. I’m pretty excited about getting a new bike.

Saturday night was a girl’s night. We went to go see Paranorman (I really liked it), and then went for drinks afterwards. The pub was right by the movie theatre. We got an amazing platter with wings, seafood, and potstickers. So tasty! By the time we left I think it was later than we all thought it would be. Apparently we’re pretty good at talking.

Pocky September 17 2012

Sunday for lunch I went to a sushi restaurant with the boyfriend. While I’ve had sushi before, this was my first time eating at an actual sushi restaurant. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little nervous about it, but he assured me there were lots of options if I didn’t want fish.

I ended up really liking it for the most part. The California rolls were amazing, along with a veggie roll I got. I tried the boyfriend’s spicy tuna rolls, but wasn’t a huge fan of it. The gyoza’s were great too. All in all I’d definitely go back. They brought us a box of Pocky at the end of the meal, which I have yet to try. They look pretty tasty and full of sugar, so I’m sure I’ll like them.

After all that food at lunch, I played floor hockey Sunday afternoon. Somehow I managed to avoid throwing up, which was good. I put in 110%, and almost had one or two goals. It was lots of fun,

Unfortunately I was pretty exhausted when I got home, even though I had a yoga class Sunday night, I definitely shouldn’t have played as hard or as long at hockey, cause the yoga class was really tough.

So that was my weekend. What did you do?

Yoga August 29 2012

I decided to sign up for a yoga class a couple weeks ago. I had a tough time deciding what I wanted to take and where I wanted to do it.

I had heard good things about one studio and was checking out the beginner classes there. Then I heard about a yoga/pilates combination class being held at the community centre in my neighbourhood. I wasn’t sure which one I wanted to take.

I finally decided to go with the yoga/pilates class. It’s a little bit cheaper, plus it’s really close. I want to eventually check out the other yoga studio, but for right now I think I’m just going to stick with the one class.

I’ve never done pilates before, so I’m a little nervous about that, but for the most part I definitely think I’ll be more comfortable than the first time I went to a yoga class.

My co-worker is a yoga instructor, and when I told her that I had signed up for another yoga class she was pretty excited. I’m definitely looking forward to my first class in a couple weeks.

My last yoga class was on Monday night. It flew by. Seriously. I’m going to miss it. I can’t afford to sign up for the next session at the moment, but I’m sure that there will be more yoga in my future.

Taking the yoga class was one of the scary things that I wanted to do this year. I’m so glad I did it. I learned a lot about myself.

I’m stronger and more flexible than I ever thought I was. I’m not going to lie, I thought I might be dead after 75 minutes. It’s a long time to do any kind of exercise. But I pushed through when it was tough and I finished every single class.

I’m more stressed out that I realized (I really need to work on that). It goes straight to my shoulders. It’s amazing how good it feels to not do strange things to my shoulders and instead stand up straight. And the stress has to go. I can’t continue to worry about stuff like I do.

I wasn’t as self conscious about my body as I thought I would be. Sure,  I was freaking out a little bit in the first class, but after while I was too busy concentrating on how to get my leg where it should be. I’m pretty sure this would translate to just about any kind of fitness class I would take. That makes me excited to try something else.

Have you learned anything from getting fit? Maybe it was a class, or a race? I’d love to hear about it.

Monday night was my first yoga class. I was definitely excited about it, but also a little scared terrified. Even though it was an intro to yoga class I had somehow convinced myself that everyone else was going to know what they were doing, and I was going to be totally clueless about everything.

But of course it wasn’t bad at all. Once I got started all I could think about was what I was doing – I’m so uncoordinated it took a lot of concentration to get my body to do what I wanted it to. Who knew that turning one foot a little to the left would make my hips do weird things?

I wasn’t worried about what I looked like or if I was doing things perfectly. I was doing the best that I could. While it might not be very good right now, I’m pretty sure that in two months when my class is over I’ll be significantly better.

This class was recommended to me by a former co-worker who teaches classes at the same place. I had asked her for some suggestions for classes, and I guess I never told her that I ended up signing up for this one.  So this morning I got an email from her, saying she saw my name on the class list, and she wanted to wish me luck and tell me that it was a very brave thing for me to do. Haha, she knows me too well. Her email made me smile, and it was a great thing for me to see first thing in the morning.

I’m officially signed up for a yoga class. If you told me a year ago I would have wanted to go to a yoga class, I would say you were crazy. Absolutely crazy.

Last year a co-worker was taking a yoga teacher course. In April she was having a “practice class” to prepare for her practical exam. She invited me to come, and I was honored to be invited and support her. It was definitely a very scary thing to do (I had never been to a yoga class in my life), but I did it. Was the class hard? Definitely. It was an advanced one, so there was lots and lots of stuff that I couldn’t do, but I tried to be okay with that and do the stuff that I could. By the time the class was over, I was exhausted, but I was really glad I went.

I’ve been thinking the last few months about taking a beginner class. So I emailed her a couple weeks ago to see if she had any suggestions, and she gave me some great advice. So now I’m enrolled in my very first yoga class.

And I might even be a little excited about it.
